Concrete Finisher
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for smoothing and finishing surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls, sidewalks, or curbs to specified textures, using hand tools or power tools including floats, trowels, and screeds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Spreads concrete to specified depth and workable consistency.
Levels, smooths, and shapes surfaces of freshly poured concrete, using straightedge and float or power screed.
Finishes concrete surfaces, using power trowel. Removes rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces, using power grinder or chisel and hammer and patches holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
Molds expansion joints and edges, using edging tools, jointers, and straightedge. May sprinkle colored tone chips, powdered steel, or coloring powder on concrete to produce prescribed finish.
May produce rough concrete surface, using broom. May mix cement, using hoe or concrete-mixing machine.
May direct subgrade work, mixing of concrete, and setting of forms.
May specialize in finishing steps and stairways.
Workers may spend time on one job or may be transferred from task to task or job to job as the project progresses to completion.
Workers should be able to: work rapidly and accurately with their hands.
Follow set procedures and standards; compare and see differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects; picture objects from drawings or diagrams; work under stress or pressure; rate information using standards that can be measured or checked; calculate amounts of concrete required for each job; and work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
Physically, workers must be able to: climb and maintain body balance; push, pull, stand, kneel, bend, crawl, or crouch for long periods; see well (either naturally or with correction); frequently lift and carry objects weighing 100 pounds or more; constantly use handheld vibrating power equipment for extended periods of time.
A job sometimes requires taking breaks at odd times and sometimes requires overtime. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, or rain. Also, must be able to work in dirt, dust, smoke, or fumes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands – Employee is frequently (more than 75% of time) required to: use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls, sit; to verbally communicate; and to hear. The employee is occasionally (up to 33% of the time) required to walk and stand. The employee must occasionally (up to 33% of the time) lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment – The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. On the worksite, Employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne participles.
Protective Equipment – Protective equipment is required when on a job site.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma preferred. Completion of apprenticeship program is helpful. Must own and maintain necessary small hand tools. Must be willing to perform tasks in other job classifications as work allows.
