Toolbox Talk: Portable Generators

Whether keeping the lights on at a job site or powering tools in remote locations, the portable generator has found its way into most construction applications. However, every year people die in incidents related to portable generator use. The primary hazards to avoid when using a generator are carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shock, and fire.

Points to Remember:
1. Always use a generator outdoors, away from doors and windows.

2. Shut down the engine before making or removing connections.

3. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operations.

4. Test and reset the GFCI monthly.

5. Make sure that the system is properly grounded before operating.

6. Never attempt to connect power to a building unless a licensed electrician has installed an approved transfer switch.

7. Know the parts of the generator that become hot while running.

8. Never attempt to move a running generator.

9. Before refueling the generator, turn it off and let it cool down.
