Toolbox Talk: Basic Crane Hand Signals

Points to Remember:

1. A crane lift is only as good as the communication between the signal person and the operator.

2. When hand signals are used, the signal person must always be visible to the operator. If the operator cannot see the signal person at all times, then a radio should be used for signaling.

3. Hold your hands away from your body so the operator can see the signal better.

4. If the operator or the signal person is unsure of the signal, stop the pick immediately and meet to discuss the signals.

5. The operator should only respond to the signal person. The only exception to this rule is an emergency stop where anyone can give that signal.

6. Always give the directions from the operator’s point of view not the signaler’s point of view. Confirm this with the operator.
